PRIME LAMBS
The Annual Christmas Show and Sale of Prime lambs saw a bumper entry of 2465 forward selling a strong trade throughout the sale with the trade holding firm until the very end. It was nice to welcome lambs to Hawes Auction from majority of the northern counties. Thanks to our vendors supporting our Christmas show with a good line up of prime lambs for our judge Mr Matthew Prince of Highfield Farm Shop, Chesterfield to cast his expertise eye over who thank for his time and expertise. A special thank you goes to our sponsors Northern Fallen Stock, Tophams Meats and Hammonds Butchers Bainbridge.
The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Beltex Lambs, this smart pair of Beltex sired lambs from BC Gregg, Ellingstring weighing 52kg went onto sell for £320 or 615p/kg purchased by the judge Mr Matthew Prince. The overall market average was 293p/kg. The trade saw well fleshed lambs continue to be eagerly bid for. There was a bumper entry of 990 mule lambs forward selling to an average of £135.30 or 292p/kg. Heavy weighted mule lambs regularly sold in excess of the one-hundred-and-forty-pound mark topping at £147.50 from Libby Winspear, Hawes. Handy weighted mules well finished weighing between 44kg to 47kg looked the trade of the day regularly selling at 300p/kg or more.
There was a bumper entry of Swaledale lambs in the market once again. Leading the way at £145 was a pen of 49kg lambs from JA Alderson, Barras followed by the consignment from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead selling to £140.50 and £139 with others pens of Swaledale lambs selling to £140.
