PRIME LAMBS

Hawes continues to have a strong trade for prime hoggs with a more mixed entry forward this week still meeting eager bidding from buyers. The sale included the annual prize show and sale of young farmers prime hoggs. A big thank goes to Martin and Sally Hare of Lane End Farm Shop, Tong, Bradford for their time and expertise judging as well as their continued support sponsoring the show and awarding trophies for each class. A special mention goes to Massey Feeds and The Sheep Show for their prizes. It was wonderful to see over 25 young farmers entering the competition, thank you to the young farmers and their families for putting the time and effort into turning out a wonderful line up of hoggs. The JW Cockett & Son Butchers, Hawes shield for the champion prime hogg was awarded to Jonathan Cloughton, Bainbridge with the first placed continental hogg with a Beltex hogg weighing 49kg sold to a top price of £240 purchased by the judge Martin Hare. The first placed native hogg was awarded to Lili Shuttleworth with her mule hogg weighing 69kg and selling for £188 purchased by the judge Martin Hare. A special thank you to all our buyers for supporting this event generously especially Martin Hare for purchasing all the prize winning hoggs.

Trade remained firm, slightly easier than the previous week. In specification hoggs continue to be the best to sell. There was more interest in heavy weight hoggs this week as buyers gain additional jobs for this specification of hoggs. Well finished mule and horned hoggs weighing mid-forties into the early fifty-kilogram bracket hoggs continue to be in big demand at Hawes with more of these required to fill buyer’s requirements with plenty of pens selling in the one hundred and fifties.

More prime hoggs required for the active ring of buyers at Hawes please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
