Show & Sale of Spring Lambs 2026

Forward: 847 Sheep comprising 222 Spring Lambs, 342 Prime Hoggs, 283 Cast Ewes and Rams, 

 

SHOW AND SALE OF SPRING LAMBS

It was Spring Lamb Show Week at Hawes today, and it was met with tremendous demand, resulting in an excellent trade and leaving vendors well pleased with the day’s proceedings.

Spring lambs sold to an impressive top price of £280 for the Champion Pair of Beltex lambs from R Mudd & Sons, Cubeck, weighing 45kg and selling at 622p/kg, purchased by D Morland. A sincere thank you goes to our judge, Mr David Palmer of Whitby, for his time and expertise, along with our sponsors Horner Shearing for their continued support.

The Reserve Champion pen was awarded to the first prize pair of Suffolk lambs from BC Gregg, Masham, weighing 47kg and selling for £230, purchased by Neil Iveson. The Gregg family enjoyed further success, with their consignment peaking at £258 for 52kg Beltex lambs.

The weekly consignment from JR & LA Capstick, Killington also enjoyed success in the show ring, securing two second prizes and a third. Their consignment topped at £266 for 49kg Beltex lambs, followed closely by £264, £255, and £248.

Heavyweight Suffolk-cross lambs topped at £254 for 51kg from JW & ME Taylor & Sons, Dent, while a couple of pens of pure heavyweight Suffolks sold to £240, achieved twice by SR Crossland and EJ Body, Low Row. Plenty more pens sold around the £230 mark, highlighting the strength of trade throughout.

The first upland lambs of the season were also forward from A & JA Iveson, Litherskew, selling 43kg Mule lambs to £180, with 41kg and 42kg lambs making £174 twice and £169. Swaledale lambs at 34kg sold to £134 from the same home. Further Mule lambs at 33kg sold to £143 from WC Porter & Son, Reeth.

Spring lambs averaged an impressive 463p/kg overall.

PRIME HOGGS

Although the prime hogg trade may now be nearing its seasonal conclusion, demand remains exceptionally strong and continues to produce an excellent trade. Heavyweight Texel hoggs peaked at £252 from D & B Harding, Whitby, who also sold Suffolk hoggs to £228. 

Horned hoggs topped at £220 from EW Snowdon & Son, Helmsley with Swaledales. Scotch Blackface hoggs sold to £202 from P Turnbull, with further hoggs from the same home reaching £191.

Another tremendous day’s trading at Hawes, with strong demand right across the board and vendors leaving well pleased.

CAST EWES 

A good show of Ewes forward with a bit more meat about and averages were up on last week. Texels topped the trade with two smart packets from S & A Bland both realising £230 followed by a consignment from JR 7 LA Capstick at £200, £192 & £190 and J Dixon & Sons at £198. BFL made £218 and £180 for J Scarr & Sons. Suffolks topped at £192 for S Featherstone with JR & LA Capstick at £190& £180. Some strong fit mules in with M & P Carter topping at £188 followed by B Spence & Sons at £180 and 2 lots making £178 for JR & LA Capstick and DA & MA Brown & Son. Not many Beltex x forward making £182 and £170 both R Mudd & Sons. Horned ewes were headed by Roughfells from GM Sedgwick & Son at £152 and £150. With M & P Carter at £132 and P Turnbull at £130 with all the Swaledales averaging £101. Rams topped with a BFL at £178 for R & J Myers and £152 & £130 for Swaledales from M & P Carter.
