CHRISTMAS SHOW OF PRIME LAMBS
Judged by Nathan Brown, Lancaster
Kindly Sponsored by Hammond’s Butchers, Bainbridge & Topham’s Meats
There was a wonderful festive show of lambs forward for the annual Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Lambs at Hawes Auction, with the mart filled with plenty of Christmas spirit and quality stock. Warm thanks go to Hammonds Butchers and Topham Meats for kindly sponsoring our seasonal show, and a special festive thank-you to judge Nathan Brown of Lancaster for his time, expertise, and good cheer throughout the morning.
The Gregg Family of Angram Livestock, Masham, kept hold of their Christmas crown, once again lifting the championship with an outstanding pair of Beltex lambs. This much-admired duo, sired by a Beltex ram purchased from Hawes Hunks, weighed 57kg and dazzled their way to £310, or 544p/kg, purchased by the Khan family. The Greggs enjoyed a day of yuletide success, also taking second place with another smart pair of Beltex lambs, selling for £220, or 440p/kg, at 50kg.
The Reserve Champion rosette brought further sparkle to the ring, awarded to the first-prize pair of Texel lambs from Luke Bell Percy, Masham. Weighing 50kg, they sold for a festive £250 to the Khan family. Also breaking the £200 barrier were the second-place Texels from D. Hodgson, Askrigg, achieving £218, followed by £200 for 53kg Texels from JR & LA Capstick, Killington. Just shy of £200 were the 47kg Beltex lambs from Laurie Blades, Hawes, selling to £198, with plenty more lambs ringing in strong Christmas-week prices in the £180s and £190s.
Hawes Auction once again lived up to its reputation for showcasing excellent Mule lambs. Double-figure entries of Mule pens came forward, with the first-place rosette going to AC & K Pye and Son, Abbeystead, selling 52kg lambs to £150. The champion pen of horned lambs brought more festive colour to the day, with the award going to the first-prize Swaledales from JS & D Cloughton & Son, Bainbridge, selling 45kg lambs for £135.
As for trade, continental export lambs enjoyed a slightly sharper seasonal lift, while heavy lambs—reflecting the national trend—were a touch easier. Handy-weight Mule lambs remained similar, with heavier types again a shade easier. Well-fleshed horned lambs were met with good demand. The overall market average finished at 291p/kg.
