Show & Sale of Summer Lambs 2026

SUMMER SHOW AND SALE OF PRIME LAMBS

There was a tremendous atmosphere around Hawes Auction Mart today for the Annual Summer Show of Prime Lambs, with a larger crowd of buyers, vendors and spectators creating a real buzz around the market. The increased entry of quality lambs met a trade well in line with the national demand, with well-finished, heavy lambs once again commanding premium prices.

The café was kept exceptionally busy throughout the day, providing the perfect meeting place for customers to catch up and enjoy the show, adding to the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that Hawes is renowned for.

The Championship Rosette was awarded to the outstanding first prize pair of butcher's lambs from David & Jean Alderson, Brignal. This much-admired pair of 50kg Beltex lambs sold for £240 (480p/kg), with the judge backing his decision and purchasing the champions.

The Reserve Championship went to the second prize pair of Beltex lambs from JR & LA Capstick, Killington. Weighing 53kg, they achieved the day's top price of £248, with the judge once again purchasing his selection. The first prize pen of Continental lambs was awarded to SJ Pedley, Little Musgrave, whose smart 46kg Texel lambs sold for £202, again purchased by the judge.

Outside of the prize-winning pens, the trade remained extremely buoyant for well fleshed heavy lambs, lambs comfortably surpassing the £200 mark. A pen of four 49kg Texels from JR & LA Capstick sold to £232, while 59kg Texels from AT Lambert & Son, Simonstone realised £230. Other leading Texel prices included £225 for 55kg lambs from Whyte & Percival. Beltex lambs from JR & LA Capstick sold to £224 for a pen of five weighing 48kg, closely followed by £222 for Beltex lambs from Jamie Pedley, Little Musgrave. Suffolk lambs peaked at £213 for 54kg lambs from David Alderson, Brignal.

Handy-weight lambs between 38kg and 44kg continued to meet demand, with the very best bred lambs once again exceeding 400p/kg. Well-finished commercial lambs regularly sold between 360p/kg and 380p/kg, proving that Hawes continues to offer an excellent outlet for all classes of prime lambs.

There was the largest entry of Mule lambs seen so far this season, and Hawes once again proved to be one of the best places to market Mule wether lambs. Topping the section at £202 was a tremendous 57kg lamb from JC & N Throup, Draughton, who also sold 44kg Mule lambs to £156 and 42kg lambs to £148. Further leading Mule prices included £174 for 48kg lambs from DJ Amsden, Hawes. A larger showing of horned lambs was also forward, topping at £141 for 42kg Dalesbred lambs from AD Lambert, Askrigg.

Another successful Summer Show, coupled with a strong trade and a tremendous atmosphere around the mart, demonstrated the continued confidence in marketing prime lambs through Hawes Auction Mart. The overall market average settled at a very respectable 369p/kg.

As the season draws to a close of prime hoggs just a very small number forward. Swaledale tup hoggs sold to £125 from RC Hallam. A couple of goats forward created much interest from buyers selling to £152 and £138 from Alec Lambert, Bainbridge.

CAST EWES

A decent show today with a bit less power about and plenty of horned ewes in the leaner bracket. Texels topped today with Ewes from J Handley at £220 & £196, B Mason achieved £184 with Croft Farm Ptns ant £182 & £180. Mules were next with two lots from J Scarr & Son both achieving £188 while JH Sharp & Son made £178 & £172 for both DA & M Brown & Son and S Bell & Sons. Massive Roughfells from E & K Bland topped the horned ewe trade at £158 & £123. Swaledales were tale of two halves with the strongest £98 and upwards with the top at £154 and £121 for J Dixon & Sons with DJ Amsden at £124 and JL & JA Sunter at £119. Average on the Swaledales was less than last week but they represented 70% of the sale with many being freshly spained wooled ewes. Grazing buyers are only wishing to purchase clipped ewes going forward.

SUMMER SHOW & SALE OF CALVES

A Quality show of Calves forward with 11 young calves from two local farms. Topping the trade was a cracking blue bull from B Clarkson and this achieved £910 selling to the judge. Only one other young bull forward and this made £695 from the same good home. We had 9 heifers forward all pretty even and although young some of these definitely had potentials to make good breeding cows. Limousin heifers topped at £695 for J Scarr & Sons, and at the same price for B Clarkson with their blue heifers, £680 was the next highest price for blue heifers from both vendors.
