HAWES HUNKS
SHOW & SALE OF TERMINAL SIRE BREEDING RAMS AND BLUEFACED LEICESTER RAMS
The annual Hawes Hunks show and sale of breeding rams was deemed a great success, with a catalogue entry twice the size of the previous year. All tups met strong demand and a good trade from start to finish.
Praise must go to the Hawes Hunks vendors for the quality of tups they put forward for our pre-sale judges, Adam Hunter of Gunnerside and Ben Gregg of Masham, whom we thank for their time and expertise. Congratulations to G. Sowerby of Ormside for taking the overall championship with their Beltex x Texel shearling tup, which created eager bidding and went on to sell for £2,200, purchased by judge Adam Hunter. The Sowerby family enjoyed a successful evening, selling other tups to £1,900 and three at £1,800, with their pen averaging £1,525.
The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize Texel from Thrimby Farms, Penrith. This powerful tup sold for £2,000, with the pen of Texel shearling tups from this home averaging £1,650.
Leading the way was a much-admired and powerful Texel shearling from J. Winter, Appleby, which created keen bidding and sold for £3,000. Texel shearling tups from J. North, Giggleswick, saw their pen top at £1,900 with a pen average of £1,280. A strong pen of Beltex x shearling tups from R.C. Tiplady, Barnard Castle, topped at £1,900, with the pen averaging £1,380. The annual consignment of Texel and Beltex x shearling tups from G.A. & D.E. Slack, Appleby, also topped at £1,800. This figure was matched by the pen leader from J.T. & J. Kelsal, Clapham, and followed by £1,700 from M.D. & G.E. Shuttleworth, Barbon. Powerful, well-conformed Texel and Beltex x rams consistently sold in excess of £1,000 throughout the evening.
Suffolk rams also created strong interest, selling to a top of £1,000 twice from R. Batty, Kendal, with a further three from the same home at £900. The consignment from L. Bosomworth, Northallerton, sold to £950 and £850.
Cheviot tups sold to a strong trade, peaking at £1,500 from J.D. & J. Ford, Arrathorne, with others from the same home selling at £1,300 and £900. The pen leader from Thrimby Farms topped at £1,100, with all Cheviot tups averaging £878.
An increased entry of over 100 Leicester tups enjoyed a buoyant trade, with powerful Leicester shearling tups in strong demand. Leading the way was the consignment from A. Lodge, Malham Moor, selling shearling tups to £2,200, £2,100, and £1,700. This was followed by shearlings from A. & H. Watson, Kirkby Lonsdale, selling to £2,000. The consignment of powerful shearlings from Simon Yates, Ellingstring, also created plenty of interest, selling to £1,800, £1,400 (x2), and £1,300. Aged rams topped at £1,500 from K. & A. Woof, Marsett. The tup lamb trade was led by J.W. & M.E. Taylor & Sons, Dent, at £1,500, with others at £900. Laurie Blades’ tup lambs sold to £950 and £900.
