Hawes Auction Mart would like to thank the following businesses for their generous support & sponsorship, Wensleydale Vets (Leyburn & Hawes) & Yorkshire Dales Accountancy, (Hawes). Hawes auction market enjoyed a successful Christmas show and sale of Cast Cows and Store Cattle.
BEEF BREEDING
The beef breeding cattle attracted plenty of attention ringside, with buyers keenly inspecting the heifers with calves at foot. Leading the way was a heifer with a strong calf at foot from GS Milburn, Dent, selling to £3,480. A Limousin × Simmental heifer with a month-old bull calf from Croft Farm, Hardraw, sold to £3,000.
STORE CATTLE
The store cattle sale was well supported by a busy ring of new and returning cattle buyers, both local and from farther afield, ensuring that all types and ages of store cattle were well bid for. The only disappointment was that there were not more cattle forward, as these could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendors. Don’t be afraid to give the cattle sales at Hawes a try.
A big thank you to Andrew Dyson, Masham, for coming down to judge the show — we are very grateful for your time and expertise. A lovely show of store cattle was put in front of Andrew, and he awarded the champion rosette to the first-place steer from JW Porter & Son, Gunnerside. This much-admired steer, bred locally in Hawes by Andrew Kiely, went on to sell for the top price of the day, £2,680, purchased by Martin and Sally Hare of Lane End Farm Shop. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first-place heifer from DJ Amsden, Hawes — a 15-month-old pedigree Limousin heifer that went on to sell for £2,440.
Quality cattle were in demand, with yearling Limousin steers from J Dixon & Sons, Downholme, selling to £2,430, and British Blues from the same home selling to £2,210. Limousin steers from JW Porter & Son, Gunnerside, sold to £2,340, followed by £2,200 for 18-month-olds from J & JH Whalley, Widdale. Native steers sold to £2,200 and £2,100 for Angus bullocks from T Metcalfe & Son, Muker. Plenty more were regularly selling in the region of the £2,000 mark.
The heifer trade saw strong demand following the reserve champion from Amsdens. Heifers sold to £2,400 for a 24-month-old Limousin from GS Milburn, Dent. British Blue heifers at 14 months old sold to £2,210 from JH Sharp & Sons, Chapel-le-Dale. Other leading prices for heifers included £2,110 for 18-month-old Limousins from Croft Farm, Hardraw, followed by £2,100 from P Dinsdale & Son, Carlton, and British Blue heifers to £2,100 from A Fawcett & Sons, Hardraw. Native-bred heifers saw Beef Shorthorn heifers sell to £2,050 from Woodend Farms, Countersett.
A nice selection of younger spring-born sucklers was also on offer. April/May-born Longhorn steers sold for £1,220, £1,160 and £1,150 from LC Scarr & Son, Bainbridge.
The next sale of store cattle will take place on Saturday 17th January 2026. Hawes continues to attract new buyers to the store cattle sales, and more numbers are required.
