Like bees around a honey pot, buyers swarmed to Hawes from throughout the land to enjoy the buzz and witness the sweet trade at the Hawes Honeys sale, where prices proved well worth the wait.

The sale opened in fine style with a Pedigree Suffolk Gimmer Hogg from G I Richmond of the Sullom flock. Plenty of early interest created a healthy hum around the ring, with the gimmer hogg eventually selling for £500.

The Show & Sale of Herdwicks continues to go from strength to strength, attracting a growing hive of buyers and sellers alike. An increased entry this year was met with a strong and steady trade throughout. Thanks go to pre-sale judge Mr Shaun Hodgson of Ravenstonedale for his careful appraisal. The Championship rosette was awarded to a much-admired Herdwick ewe from Jessica Harrison of Holmrook. This standout lot certainly caught the eye, drawing eager bidding before selling for the top price of the day at £2,200.

The Reserve Champion was awarded to A D Harrison for a Gimmer Shearling, which went on to sell for £480, with the second prize from the same home making £450. Sweeping the deck from first to third in the Gimmer Hoggs were Geoff & Carol Marwood of Newsham. Their first prize gimmer hogg, sired by the Harryman tup, proved the pick of the crop and sold sweetly for £500. Herdwick ewes averaged a strong £485, Gimmer Shearlings £460 and Gimmer Hoggs £410.

The Show & Sale of Swaledale females generated a real buzz, with plenty of buyers keen to secure quality sheep. Thanks go to judge Mr Shaun Thompson of Marton Sinnington for lending his expertise to a very competitive section. The Championship rosette was awarded to a stylish Gimmer Shearling from Robbie Hallam of Horton in Ribblesdale. This much-admired shearling, sired by the £105,000 Ghyll House tup and in lamb to a homebred sire, attracted keen interest before selling for £2,000. A successful day for the Hallam family continued with their ewe selling for £1,500.

Reserve Champion honours — and the top price of the section — went to a two-shear ewe from R S Harker & Son of Grayrigg Hall. Sired by the renowned Bull & Cave Icon and in lamb to the Hebblethwaite Hall tup, she caused quite a stir in the ring before eventually settling at £3,100. Other leading prices included £1,900 for the third prize Gimmer Shearling from D W & K Hutchinson of Hawes, sired by the Trevor Blades tup and in lamb to a Murton Hall tup. The consignment from J R & S L Pratt twice hit the sweet spot, topping at £1,000 for both a Gimmer Shearling and a ewe. Gimmer Shearlings averaged £1,280, while ewes averaged £1,358.

A truly honey-rich line-up of Bluefaced Leicesters was forward, with credit due to vendors for presenting sheep of the highest calibre. Thanks go to judges Ridley and Lewis Brown for their work with such a strong entry. The Championship rosette was awarded to the Wight family of Midlock Farms with substitute lot T152 — the pick of their Gimmer Shearlings this year. Sired by Shitlington R6, she created a real buzz in the ring before selling for £8,000. Other notable prices from the Midlock flock included £3,200 for T96, a Gimmer Shearling carrying twins to M1 Riddings, along with further Shearlings selling for £2,500 and £2,200.

The Reserve Champion rosette went to the first prize Gimmer Hogg from J Bell of the Cottage flock. V49, sired by T2 Drummuck, went on to sell for £5,000. The honey pot moment of the day came when a new society record was smashed by the Lord family of the renowned Hewgill flock, as their lead hogg Hewgill V40 soared to £22,000. This outstanding hogg was sired by the homebred R38. A sweet return for the Lord family also saw their second hogg, Hewgill V38, sired by T23 Hewgill, sell for £10,000. One of the best hoggs offered from the Gragareth flock of W & D Lawson & Son sold for £6,200, with V30 sired by T16 Midlock.

Other leading prices for Gimmer Hoggs included £3,000 for the pen leader from M Allan of Appleby, selling V68 Greenhow, sired by M1 Smearsett. A particularly rewarding day for M Thornborrow of Easter Dawyck saw their Gimmer Shearlings peak at £3,500 for the third prize T62, sired by S18 Dawyck Bullseye and carrying twins to T3 Skelgate. Other Shearlings sold to £3,000 for T55, by the same sire and carrying twins to T1 Hewgill. The Thornborrow family also topped the aged ewe section with Dawyck R66, a daughter of the £65,000 P1 Riddings and carrying twins to the new stock tup T29 Shitlington.

Bluefaced Leicester Gimmer Hoggs averaged an impressive £2,786, Gimmer Shearlings averaged £2,020 and ewes averaged £1,245 — proving this section was well worth buzzing about.
