The Annual Hawes Hunks Show and Sale of Terminal Sire Breeding Rams and Leicesters continues to go from strength to strength in its third year, with another outstanding entry and a record-breaking sale. This increasingly popular fixture is fast establishing itself as an important date in the calendar for ram breeders, with the sale attracting a strong following of vendors and buyers from across the country.

A busy evening at Hawes Auction once again saw the top ring filled to capacity, with standing room only as buyers competed for an excellent selection of quality breeding rams. With tups to suit all buyers’ budgets and requirements, there was strong competition throughout the sale, with buyers keen to secure their next stock tup. The continued growth and support for Hawes Hunks highlights the strength of the sale and its growing reputation as a leading breeding ram fixture.

Beltex Breeding Rams

Hawes Auction were proud to work with the Northern Beltex Club in establishing a new section within the sale. This well-supported section created plenty of interest, with vendors leaving well pleased with their returns on their debut at Hawes Hunks. The Championship rosette was awarded to an admired shearling from Jack Ayrton of the Ayrti’s flock, with Ayrti’s Legend selling for £1,500. The section was topped by DW & KCB Shuttleworth of the Heber Park flock, selling the pick of their pen to £1,600. Other leading prices saw the consignment from Wannop Farms sell to £1,400 twice.

Terminal Sire Breeding Rams

The quality continues to improve each year at the Hawes Hunks Terminal Sire Breeding Ram Sale, with credit going to our vendors for their continued support of the sale. Thanks go to the pre-sale show judges, Tom Carlisle, Skipton, and Ashley Caton, Malham Moor, for their time and expertise.

The Champion rosette was awarded to the first-placed Beltex and crossbred ram from Jack Ayrton, Lancaster, which went on to sell for £1,500. The Reserve Champion was the first-placed Texel, a powerful lad from J Winter, Appleby, which went on to sell for £2,000.

The Terminal Sires were topped by RJ & RC Tiplady, selling powerful Texel tups to £2,100, with others from this home selling to £1,900, £1,800 and £1,600 twice. At £2,000 was a powerful Texel from Messrs Buckle. The consignment of big Texel tups from Thrimby Farms sold to £2,000, with others to £1,850 and £1,700 twice. Other pen leaders saw G Sowerby selling to £1,800, matched by GA & DE Slack with their pen leader. The Beltex tups sold to £1,550 from J Eckersley.

Suffolk tups met strong demand, selling to a top of £1,350 from Sam and Emily Crossland, with others from this pen selling to £1,250 and £1,200. Suffolk ram lambs sold to £850 and £800 from GI Richmond.

Cheviot Rams

The Cheviot section was won by J & A Brittain with a powerful Park-type ram that went on to sell for £1,000. Topping the section was Thrimby Farms, selling Hill-type Cheviots to £1,400 and £1,300. Park-type Cheviots sold to a top of £1,150 from I Ford.

Leicester Rams

This sale is gaining momentum as new records continue to be smashed. The sale topped at £6,500 for a shearling tup sired by Highberries S5 from Neil and Mary Marston. Having already sired two lambs in their prize-winning top pen, he created much interest, with other shearling tups from this home selling to £1,600 and £1,000.

This was followed at £3,500 for a recommended shearling from RS Harker & Son, Grayrigg, with others to £1,400. Other highlights saw WA Dinsdale & Son selling a powerful shearling to £2,800. Aged Leicester tups peaked at £1,300 from K & A Woof. Ram lambs topped at £2,000 from JW & ME Taylor & Son, followed by a couple of ram lambs selling to £1,500 from Messrs Lord, Hewgill.
