Spring Show & Sale of Calves 2026

Tuesday 21st April 2026

Forward: 11 Calves Sheep comprising 334 Prime Hoggs, 228 Cast Ewes and Rams & 170 Sheep with 275 Lambs at Foot.

 

PRIME HOGGS 

The weekly sale of prime hoggs continues to have a strong trade with more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendors. Leading the way this week once again was heavy weighted continental hoggs selling to £221 for 52kg for texels from R Mudd & Son, Cubeck. This was followed by £218 for 51kg Texels from Whyte & Percival, Bainbridge. The height remains on for the handy weighted continental hoggs that continue to easily sell over the 410p/kg mark selling to a top of 451p/kg for 41kg beltex hoggs from R Mudd & Son, Cubeck. 

Hawes continues to offer a strong trade for upland hoggs peaking at £200 for Swaledale tup hoggs from JR Blades, Muker followed by £194 from T Metcalfe & Son, Muker. Herdwick tup hoggs peaked at £190 for heavy weights from M/S Lightfoot, Glenridding with Dalesbreds selling to a top of £186 from M/S Coates, Settle and Rough Fells to £183 from A & H Watson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Mules peaked at £187 from Whyte & Percival, Bainbridge with a penful of 52kg mules selling to £180 from T & LM Goad & Sons, Dent. Handy weighted mules sold to 400p/kg from JW & E Bostock with swales peaking at 395p/kg from S Bell & Sons, Askrigg.

CAST EWES 

Ewes were a very good trade & ewes with meat were especially well bid for. Some of the leaner sorts wouldn’t be just as dear as the week before but still a very good trade. Texels topped the trade at £260 and £258 with R Caton reaching £250 & £238 for some belting Cheviot Mules from JR Blades. With 10 lots of Tex x at £222 or above. BFL achieved £208 for JH Sharp & Son with A & H Watson achieving £190. That same vendor topped the mule section at £208 followed by R Caton at £192. Hill Cheviots made £172 and £166 for JR Blades. Strong Swaledales sold to A top of £156 for JS & S Atkinson. With two vendors closely following at £150 were RW & MA Suttill & Son & J Alderson. Nine lots of Swaledales were £130 or above with medium ewes achieving £90-£120 and the leanest £70-£90. Rams today topped by the Texels at £228 for AC & SG Ramsden and £208 for T Metcalfe & Son. BFL Topped at £222 for J & J Postlethwaite followed by SD Thompson at £215. Only four Swales forward but all strong rams with both J Sunter & Sons & RA Sowerby achieving £168.

SALE OF EWES WITH LAMBS AT FOOT

The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot saw the largest entry of the season with an offering of 170 outfits with families to suit all buyers’ requirements as more younger replacement ewes and hill bred sheep come on to the market. Leading the way this week was the run of Mule gimmer shearlings and twin texel lambs from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton selling to £435, £415 and £390 with mule shearlings and singles selling to £330. Continental shearlings sold to a top of £370 with twins from JA Alderson, Barras followed by £360 from A Lambert, Bainbridge. 

The older sheep saw powerful outfits in big demand with buyers slightly shying away from the smaller and younger families. Strong outfits continue to be in demand with strong Suffolk aged ewes and twin lambs selling to £390 from MW & HE Pedley, Kirkby Stephen with continental ewes and twins selling to £355 from the same home. Aged mule ewes with texel twins peaked at £355 from JS & S Atkinson followed by £345 from Booth Bros, Sedbergh. 

The single trade saw aged continental ewes and singles top at £280 from MW & HE Pedley, Kirkby Stephen followed by £275 from Alec Lambert.

There are over 100 families already entered for next week’s sale with more entries required for the catalogue before Wednesday at 5pm.

SHOW & SALE OF CALVES

Spring Show of Calves for the Bill Thompson Trophy, kindly sponsored by Genus Breeding & Raydale Preserves, Hawes. 

Today we held our spring show & sale of calves. Once again, we were kindly sponsored by Genus Breeding & Raydale Preserves and our thanks go to them and also our thanks to our judges Hannah & Martin Pedley who backed their choice today by purchasing the champion and reserve champion today. We had 11 young calves forward and with 8 active buyers round the ring more could have been sold to an advantage. Top price and champion today came from J Scarr & Sons and was a Limousin bull that sold for £900. The Reserve Champion came from the same home a blue heifer made £740 again going to our judges.  H Kirkbride & Soon came again with some strong Limousin bulls achieving £790, £760. Two blue bulls 1 month old sold for 3780 & £700 from B Clarkson.
