PRIME LAMBS
The Summer Show and Sale of prime lambs saw a strong and well-presented entry forward, with large numbers filling the show pens and generating strong competition throughout the day. A special thank you goes to the judge, Mr Thomas Birbeck, for his time and expertise, and to I’Anson Feeds, represented by Gail Harker, for generously sponsoring the sale. Taking the overall championship was the first prize pair of lambs consigned by JR & LA Capstick, Killington, which attracted eager bidding in the ring and sold for £242 at 49kg to Dave Morland of Tebay Services. The reserve champion rosette went to the second prize pair of lambs from BC Gregg, Masham, with 45kg Beltex lambs selling to £220 and purchased by M Hare of Lane End Farm Shop, Tong. It was a successful day for the Gregg family, who also secured the first prize pen of five continental lambs, selling at £198 for 44kg, again to M Hare. JR & LA Capstick also enjoyed further success, taking the first prize pen of Suffolk-sired lambs, which sold to £185 at 48kg and were purchased by the judge. Congratulations to all the prize winners and thank you to everyone who entered and supported the show.
The trade continues to hold up remarkably well for the time of year, with this week’s market average reaching 345p/kg—a rise of 52p compared to the same week last year. Trade remained similar throughout the sale, with well-fleshed, heavy-weight lambs commanding premium prices and the best of them exceeding £200. A quality consignment of continental lambs from S Troughton, Sedbergh sold to £208 and £202, both at 49kg. Heavy-weight Texels from A Lodge, Malham Moor sold to £204, followed by £202 from J & S Mitchell, Sedbergh. Numerous pens achieved prices well over £180. Lambs with top conformation continue to sell around 400p/kg, with the best show lambs reaching 495p/kg and 490p/kg. Handy-weight commercial lambs maintained a very similar trade to previous weeks. Upland-bred lambs are now coming forward in greater numbers, with Cheviot crosses topping at £162 from DA & MA Brown & Son, Leyburn, and Mule lambs reaching £155 from DJ Amsden, Hawes. Lamb numbers are required each week at Hawes, with vendors once again leaving pleased with their day’s trading.
