Thursday 2nd October 2025

THE ANNUAL SALE OF BLUEFACED LEICESTER RAMS & FEMALES ON BEHALF OF THE BLUEFACED LEICESTER SHEEP BREEDERS ASSOCIATION

Kindly Sponsored by I’ Anson Bros & Castle Farm Vets

Forward: 585 Sheep comprising 512 Ram Lambs, 49 Shearling Rams, 14 Aged Rams and 10 Gimmer Lambs.

The Great Annual Show and Sale of Bluefaced Leicester breeding rams and females, held on behalf of the Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders Association, was deemed a tremendous success with a roaring trade from start to finish. Vendors and buyers travelled from far and wide to Hawes Auction to enjoy the spectacular sale, with judging commencing at 7.15am and the final lot selling at 10.30pm.

A special thank you goes to the judges and sponsors of the sale. The championship rosette was awarded to J Hunter and Son of the Steel flock for the second year in a row, with their pen leader Steel V001, sired by the well-known Midlock Black Magic.

The sale peaked at £40,000 for a much-admired tup lamb from C & M Richards with Mcffi V001, which had already enjoyed a successful show season, winning first prize ram lamb at the Royal Welsh Show. This lamb was sired by Temain S1. The next leading price was £35,000 for the pen leader from Amy Campbell of Glenrath, with V001 sired by Steel T2. The consignment from Jimmy Bell and Rachel Buckle reached £28,000 with their third prize lamb, Cottage V001, sired by Tarnthorne S005, with other lambs from this home selling to £10,000. The annual consignment from the famous Hewgill flock of the Lord family saw Hewgill V001 sell for £28,000, sired by the homebred T023. Also selling in excess of £20,000 was the pen leader from the Ridley family of Shitlington Hall, who have enjoyed great success with their Mule gimmer lambs this autumn. Their much-admired lamb, Shitlington V1, sold for £22,000.

In the aged ram section, leading the way was the well-known Carry House P001, better known as “Ronaldo,” who created much interest and sold for £9,000. Shearling rams were in strong demand, and more could easily have been sold. The top price was £5,000 for a shearling from Ellis Bros, followed by the Breck House consignment selling to £4,200 and £4,000.
