Gregg Day – A roaring success with records smashed!
Hawes Auction Mart’s “Gregg Day” — the final breeding sale of the season — proved a great success. A packed ringside throughout the day, an overflowing car park, and a café selling out of food all demonstrated the popularity of this ever-growing sale, with a strong trade from start to finish. A special thank you goes to the sale day sponsors, WE & MG Redfearn Ltd (Fencing Supplies), Peregrine Asset Finance, and Agri Lloyd, represented by Aine Devlin, for their valued support.
The sale commenced with the Swaledale breeding rams. Thanks are extended to Elliot Hutchinson of Old Spital for his time and expertise in judging, and well done to the young shepherd for carrying out the role so capably. The championship rosette was awarded to R Hutchinson & Son, Valley Farm, with the first-place shearling, which went on to sell for £2,000. Stealing the headlines and setting a new Gregg Day record at £4,800 was the second-place shearling ram from M.R. Ewbank, Middlesmoor, which created much interest among breeders. Other leading prices for Swaledale shearling rams included £2,500 from M.F. Beadle & Sons and £2,200 from T.W. Cowperthwaite, with virtually all Swaledale tups sold. Aged Swaledale rams topped at £850 for the prize-winning tups from J.R. & A.E. Airey, Elslac, and L. Smith & Co, Tindale Fell.
Leicester tups met with eager bidding and strong demand. The consignment from R.S. Harker & Son, Grayrigg Hall, led the way, topping at £1,800 for a shearling, with aged rams from the same home selling to £650. Aged rams also topped at £700 from J.R. Lancaster, who sold shearlings to £700. Plenty of tups sold between £400 and £700, with ram lambs from W.C. Porter & Son, Reeth, leading the way at £400.
In the terminal sire section, trade peaked at £1,000 for an aged Beltex x ram from K. Milburn & A. Devlin. The shearling section was topped by Lucas and Nairey, Blackburn, who were selling at Hawes for the first time and enjoyed a strong debut, selling Texel shearlings to £720 and Texel x Rouge to £600.
There was plenty of interest in the breeding females throughout the sale. Swaledale ewes continued to sell at a strong trade, consistent with the rest of the autumn. The consignment from Wayne and Karen Hutchinson led the way, selling a pen of much-admired young mixed-aged ewes to £290 and £240. A couple of aged ewes from Geoff and Carol Marwood sold to £250, with plenty of three- and four-crop Swaledale ewes generally selling between £150 and £180. Continental shearlings topped at £265 from R.W. & M.A. Suttill & Son, who also sold Mule shearlings to £225. Mule gimmer shearlings topped at £235 from T.M. Barrass & Sons, while Mule ewes sold to a top of £230 from Geoff and Carol Marwood. A consignment of Texdale gimmer shearlings from D. & E.M. & I.D. Brown sold to £202 and £185.
The gimmer lamb trade was strong, with Mule gimmer lambs in high demand. Very few pens were under the £120 mark, giving an overall market average of £131.90. The strongest lambs sold in excess of £150, peaking at £178 from J.C. Fawcett, followed by £168 from D. Alderson. Suffolk x gimmer lambs topped the gimmer section, selling to £190 from D. Alderson. Continental gimmer lambs from C.T. & J.E. Willoughby, Redmire, sold to a top of £175 and £165. The Willoughby family also sold their final pen of Masham lambs, marking the end of many successful years of breeding, selling to £140. A good number of Swaledale lambs were forward, offering something to suit all specifications and budgets. The best lambs sold in the region of £150, with a powerful consignment from E. & K. Bland, Tebay, selling to £162, £155, £152, £148, and £145, and others from K. & H.J. Fawcett selling to £150 and £140.
