May Show & Sale Ewes with Lambs 2026

Forward: 1566 Sheep comprising 7 Spring Lambs, 598 Prime Hoggs, 299 Cast Ewes and Rams, and 251 Ewes with 411 Lambs at foot.

 

SPRING LAMBS

Spring lambs were in strong demand at Hawes Auction Mart today, with numbers now needed to meet buyers’ requirements as companies look for more lambs. A firm trade saw all lambs forward average £211.29 or 462p/kg. Leading the way were 48kg Suffolk lambs selling to £232 from BC Gregg, Masham. The consignment from KJ Burrow, Dent topped at £224 for 50kg Suffolks.

PRIME HOGGS 

An increased entry of over 600 prime hoggs met plenty of demand, with trade remaining firm throughout. Handy-weight continentals sold in excess of 400p/kg, topping at 450p/kg and grossing £214 for Beltex hoggs from JW & JH Burton & Son, Gayle, purchased by Martin Hare. Heavyweight Texels peaked at £204 from AP Moore, Reeth, while a full pen of 52kg Texel hoggs from AT Lambert & Son, Simonstone sold to £200, again purchased by Martin Hare.

Hill-bred hoggs topped at £202 for heavyweight Swaledale tup hoggs from JW Porter & Sons, Gunnerside.

CAST EWES 

Good show of Ewes & Rams forward today with every class of sheep forward. Texels topped the trade at £240 with both R Marwood & Son & SM Iveson achieving £228. A good consignment from HB Farms, Fadmoor topped a few sections with Suffolks at £230 followed by KJ Burrow at £196. Mules also headed by HB Farms at £186 with JW & JH Burton & Son at £180 BFL topped at £205 for J Turnbull. Hill Cheviots topped at £180 for HB Farms with JR Blades at £146 and £138. Some stonking Roughfell ewes came from E & K Bland selling for £167 & £166. Swales topped at £142 for A Sharples with JW & JH Burton & Son at £141 and RA & M & EJ Thompson at £140. Few more tups around today and were sought after with £245 Texel for Taylor Bros with D & B Harding at £230. BFL topped at £200 for S & RJ Calvert followed at £185 Ted Alderson. Two massive Blackface Rams came from D & B Harding and realised £197 & £170. Swaledales topped at £170 for JE Cowperthwaite and £150 for KD Hulley.

The May Show and Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot saw an increased entry of over 250 outfits, met by a strong ring of buyers and a lively trade from start to finish. A special thank you goes to judge Trevor Sharp for his time and expertise, along with our sponsors, Paradigm Sharpening and Labbate Building, for their continued support.

The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of continental gimmer shearlings with Beltex twins from Libby Winspear, Hawes, which went on to sell for a prize-winning record of £550. The reserve champion rosette went to the first prize pen of Mule gimmer shearlings with Texel twins from K & A Woof, Marsett, selling for £370, with continental gimmer shearlings and twins from the same home also reaching £370.

The first prize pen of continental ewes with twins came from WC Stones & Son, Arkengarthdale, with two-crop ewes selling to £415.

A run of Cheviot Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs at foot from JS & D Cloughton & Son, Bainbridge met eager bidding, with young sheep selling to £420 and older ewes making £415 and £395. Mule ewes topped at £360 for two-crop ewes with twins from JR Fothergill, Hawes, while aged ewes with twins topped at £355 from JC White, Lunesdale.

A larger proportion of hill-bred sheep forward today met plenty of demand, with some buyers leaving empty-handed. The first prize rosette was awarded to Owlands Farm, Hurst for a pen of correct Swaledale ewes with Mule twins selling to £322. Dalesbred ewes with twin Mule lambs from the same home sold to £335.

A highlight of the sale was the consignment of Swaledale sheep with Mule lambs from SD Thompson, Aysgarth, peaking at £335 for a Swaledale ewe with a smart single Mule gimmer lamb. Pens of Swaledale ewes with Mule twins from the same home sold to £315 and £300. Young Swaledale ewes with twin Mule lambs sold to £325 from Ronnie Metcalfe, Gunnerside. Aged Cheviot ewes with Cheviot Mule twin lambs topped at £260 from A & TA Blades, Hawes.

A special consignment of Zwartble ewes with lambs at foot from K Slee, Mallerstang, saw a Zwartble ewe with twin gimmer lambs sell to £500, while a ewe with a wether lamb sold to £220.

Trade and demand remain strong, with vendors encouraged to enter sheep for next week’s sale. On Tuesday 19th May 2026, the sale will include the Annual Show and Sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot, alongside the May Sale of Machinery.
